This double-CD set of slow-burning southern punk rock should be on heavy rotation at every trendy barbecue joint in town. Loverly Music is the Space Fish records of the Memphis area with a twist: Since 1993 it has been releasing nothing but vinyl singles.
The festivities get off on the right foot with Lorette Velvette's Sun Records/Athens-party band inspired covers of Marc Bolan's "20th Century Boy" and Iggy Pop's "Dirt." The recording is by turns white-boy funky, torchy, rockin' and rollin' and just plain greasy. From the sultry Velvette to the brilliance of New Car Smell, there must have been a fair amount of moonshine available in the studios to make rebel rock this genuine. Come to think of it, a little hootch on the listener's end wouldn't be a bad idea either.
