Some debut albums make striking impressions from the get-go, while others clue the listener in on a band's career potential. Foil's "Spread It All Around" does both, setting the mood from the opening track and not letting up until the entire spectrum of hard-edged rock has been explored.
The Edinburgh, Scotland, band comes across as a more mature version of Green Day in their approach to song structure and lyrics. "Are You the Enemy?" is a prime example, delivering an outraged message of distrust. "Control Freak" sounds like the opening monologue from "Trainspotting" if Ewan McGregor had been a million times angrier. The best cut on the album by far is "Don't Come Around," which utilizes a speed metal attack to relate the story of a man and his ex-girlfriend.
Foil is the kind of band that brings out the untapped, mildly sadomasochistic instincts of unsuspecting individuals.
