Patti Smith's debut album was a seminal contribution to the punk rock timeline upon its release in 1975. "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine" remains the definitive startling opening line to Smith's mining rock history with Van Morrison's "Gloria" and Wilson Pickett's "Land of 1,000 Dances" in an attempt to bring it all back home, '70s rock-poet style. Her starfucker dreams, direct descendants of Andy Warhol's worship of fame and an antecedent for Sonic Youth's icon-alignment pact, add dimension to what quickly becomes a hat trick with no rabbits. This 30th Anniversary Edition skimps on extras. "My Generation," the live B-side to "Gloria" with John Cale on bass, is the only 1975-related outtake. The second disc is a 2005 live re-creation of the album, with original guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty being joined by Tony Shanahan, Tom Verlaine and Flea for a competent, if relatively unexciting, run through the original.
