Lupe Fiasco and Sky Gellatly headline FMF as the Soundclash

The charitable motivation for their 2012 EP resonates with FMF ethos

FLORIDA MUSIC FESTIVAL PRESENTS THE SOUNDCLASH

8 p.m. Thursday, April 18 | Wall Street Plaza main stage, 26 Wall St. | floridamusicfestival.com | $15

Last year, Lupe Fiasco and Sky Gellatly decided to join DJ forces and put out an EP of remixes under the name the Soundclash. The EP is called Don’t Drop the Flag, and a huge part of its original intent was to donate all of the proceeds from its sales to a children’s charity. It wasn’t just a bare PR ploy, either, as both have genuinely vocalized how critical it is for entertainers to demonstrate to kids how cool it can be to give back, in hopes that budding artists’ rock star fantasies will include daydreaming about all the people they could help from that position. It’s noble, and this approach to influencing music culture is not far off from the primary intent of the local festival that the Soundclash will be headlining this week: Florida Music Festival. Now in its 12th year, FMF continues to support local musicians by inviting industry experts and experienced artists to mentor the new crop toward sustainable music careers. This year’s lineup includes a range of 200 bands and artists, covering everything from pop country to pop punk, and advance passes to see all the shows are priced at $15. The full schedule can be found at the FMF site, in addition to information on how to join industry conferences.
