Review - Laugh Lines

Artist: Viewmaster

I once had a View-Master when I was a kid. Unfortunately it only came with reels of Disney pictures, and I got bored real quick. NYC's Viewmaster tends to hold my attention (and capture my imagination) quite a bit longer.

Reminiscent of a less cluttered Polvo, Viewmaster doesn't rely on layers of lo-fi racket to suffocate you. The stripped-down indie-pop that Viewmaster creates is characterized by sly, melodic basslines and gorgeous, slightly dissonant guitars that chime, reverberate and sometimes feedback. Jim Scheiner's lyrics seem to be autobiographical and literate, recalling everyday struggles that most of us can relate to. When he sings the lines, The blue Chevette we got from my uncle/You drove that thing until it died, you can practically smell the overheated radiator.
