Last weekend's Cardboard Art Festival reminded us all of how fantastic simple materials can be with the right manipulation, but if there was anyone in town who already knew the potential of recycled materials, it's the kind folks at Shine Shed, who dazzled us last year on a number of occasions with impressive stage displays. Perhaps most notable was the Accidental Music Festival-connected parking lot pre-party for Deerhoof's show at the Plaza Live, where a dramatically costumed scene unfolded amidst giant paper trees and fabricated bird kites. But let's not dwell on the past, because it's a new year, and Shine Shed has given us something to look forward to this weekend at the Peacock Room.
On Sunday, Feb. 3, you can see the debut of Shine Shed's newest installation: a multicolored rock formation made from styrofoam and LEDs. I'm told the installation will be up for a few weeks, but the project will be kicked off with a show including MSNRA, Nova Joven, Peace Arrow and one of my favorite new bands in town, Wekiwa (I swear it's not exclusively because of my fondness for the Springs). In addition to the music, Shine Shed will also be having a sort-of craft fair, so if you like their style, now's your first chance this year to take a piece of the Shed home with you.
