Recorded by a Swedish-born singer who, at the age of 15, measured her future against the records of João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Elin's debut has all the placid allure of a Rio beach at midnight. Though not a natural vocalist ' Elin's amiable voice is small in stature and occasionally reedy ' she is an exceptional dramatist, drawing in the listener with the smartly placed phrase or rhythm. One example of her cozy appeal is a beautiful reading of 'Lazy Afternoon, where she stretches phrases into a shimmering, nearly wordless stream of sound. On ballads (such as Jobim's 'Bonita) Elin sounds particularly inspired. Like a Sinatra disciple, she measures a song's tempo and mood through careful phrasing and luxurious delivery, words flowing like cream. Elin composed a handful of tunes for Lazy Afternoon, and her choice covers (Edu Lobo, Milton Nascimento) show her love of the Brazilian canon.
