Listen, we’d make a much bigger deal about this being the first show at the newest addition to the formidable Mills Avenue neighborhood (next door to Will’s Pub) following a breathless buildup, but as of press time, Lil Indies is still not open for business (!!) and this show has now been moved to Will’s Pub. It’s too bad because David Dondero might be the most appropriate singer-songwriter to christen an endeavor like Lil Indies. So we’ll focus on the guy with the guitar, regardless of the stage on which he’s playing. The NPR favorite is a journeyman of the extreme sort, one who sometimes sleeps in his car between gigs and whose songs can be so charmingly diversionary that their subjects range from historical churches to pampered puppies. Whatever the topic or sleeping arrangements, though, Dondero’s delivery and considered lyrics shine through. – Justin Strout
