THE LATEST: LGBT lawyers back up assertion that NOT issuing marriage licenses is the real crime

The news never stops as we race toward Jan. 6, that hallowed day on which Florida's gay and lesbian couples will be, gasp, granted the right to marry... and, despite all the confusion currently clogging our argumentative Christmas Eve minds, we're willing to bet that it will indeed happen. We're hearing the U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle has issued an order requiring responses to the motion to clarify that was filed yesterday, for one. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is already making arrangements to marry folks at City Hall on Jan. 6, for two (If you want to get married at this ceremony, check out the MBA page here or contact [email protected]), and Equality Florida along with the National Center for Lesbian Rights issued a legal briefing, today, on Christmas Eve, to all of the states 67 county clerks. In short, the letter lays out case history rather convincingly and urges clerks to recognize that constitutionality overrides the petty game-playing of a consulting team telling you that you might get arrested. Also, if you do, good luck to the plaintiffs, as they'll have to argue this gazillion-times-won battle about marriage all over again. In other words, you're safe. You can read the memo below. Have a great holiday, and we'll see you on the other side.
