Epic Japanese post-rock band Mono have always been grand in scale and ambition. But all those mounting descriptions of them being “symphonic” or “nearly classical” have now been made literal by their incredibly filmic new album, For My Parents. Their 2006 collaboration with World’s End Girlfriend, Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain, marked the watershed. Now, their transformation into a classical rock band – that is, a rock band that plays classical music – is essentially complete. Rock instruments are still in play, but Mono have pushed their expression into a more fully orchestral language. Fear not, though; their exacting sense of high drama is still the pulse here, and it always translates tenfold in person. – Bao Le-Huu
