SNL might have been on to something with their sketch
that showed us how to deal with difficult racist relatives at the Thanksgiving table, but what's the real thing that will get us all through the next four days with people you wouldn't necessarily choose to hang out with on any other given day?
Alcohol.
Wine, specifically, since Thanksgiving is a food holiday and wine is the natural go-with for all those calories. The
2015 Beaujolais Nouveau was just released, but if you've had enough of a grape no one has ever heard of unless you're a connoisseur of French varietals, there might be other corks in the bar you can pop off for the holiday.
Food & Wine magazine published the illustration below to help you pair all those Thanksgiving pies with the perfect bottle. We love the idea of forgoing a spicy red in lieu of riesling's soft pear-and-honey notes with pumpkin pie, and riesling's sister grape, gewurztraminer, goes wonderfully with pumpkin pie's sister: sweet, sweet potato pie. And a PB&J of peanut butter pie with pinot noir? Yes, please.
After a couple of glasses, pair up with your least favorite relative and say "gewurztraminer" as fast as possible, in unison. You'll be best buds in no time.
