The “Troubles” of Northern Ireland are an evergreen (heh) topic of fiction. Countless plays, movies and novels are set amid Ireland’s grim struggle for self-rule, perhaps because the combination of a bloody political conflict and a people known for their black humor is an irresistible one. On the heels of St. Patrick’s Day, The Flight of the Earls, a tragicomedy about terrorism of both the emotional and the IRA sort, sweeps into the Lowndes’ Mandell Theatre in a flourish of local stage heavyweights (John DiDonna, C.K. Anderson, Becky Eck, Marty Stonerock, Bill Warriner, Jennifer Bonner and many more). Empty Spaces Theatre Co.’s production of Christopher Humble’s play will limn the usual passive wives, whiskey-sodden elders and hotheaded hard men, but given the stellar cast and crew, we can expect a gut-punch honest take on a melancholy and brutal historical moment. – Jessica Bryce Young
