We admit, the story of Windover Farms sounds like the plot of any given CSI episode: Indiscriminate construction worker, breaking ground on a new subdivision, digs up a dozen or so human skulls in his backhoe basket. It’s quite morbid, when you think about it (and the fact it actually happened near Highway 50 and I-95 in Titusville back in 1982). But bioarchaeologist Dr. Rachel Wentz, and her book Life and Death at Windover: Excavations of a 7,000-year-old Pond Cemetery explains the cultural significance of Windover’s archeological findings – the remains of nearly 170 people unearthed from the pond illustrate not-so-far-from-modern burial traditions, with last-supper items of elderberries and fish bones, and cradled mementos like children’s toys. Wentz will also share accounts from her global skeletal digs, and fear not, if you’ve got any hanging around your closet, she’s likely to uncover those, too. – Aimee Vitek
