Keeping cool while keeping cultured: Orlando in July

Boardwalk Kids Theater, in partnership with Orlando Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and CRPS Partners in Pain, are teaming up for Christmas in July at the Center on July 28. The event (which is scheduled to include a bake sale, silent auction, craft vendors and children’s activities) will raise funds for the GLBT community center and awareness for the participating nonprofits. BWKT (boardwalkkidstheater.com) is an inclusive youth theater where kids of all abilities perform and direct; artists and organizations can email [email protected] to get involved.

The shore is always a sound summer destination, and two of Orlando’s funniest theater troupes are trekking to the coast for this weekend’s fifth annual Sarasota Improv Festival at Florida Studio Theatre (floridastudiotheatre.org). Jester Theater and SAK Comedy Lab are two of the 16 groups from across the country performing at the festival, which is headlined by Chicago’s Improvised Shakespeare Company. Other improvisers on hand hail from Austin, Boston and Atlanta, along with Florida-based troupes from Jacksonville, St. Petersburg and Boca Raton.

What could be nicer than an air-conditioned museum on a muggy day? Winter Park’s Albin Polasek Museum (polasek.org) hosts award-winning sculptor Peter Forester for a six-hour live sculpting demonstration, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13. Attendees can come and go as they like as Forester crafts a portrait bust; pity the live model, who is in for the long haul.
