Orlando International Airport said Wednesday that Terminal C should be open to passengers by July 2022.

The south terminal, which is estimated to cost more than $2 billion, is 87 percent completed.

As many as 10 million more passengers will be able to pass through the terminal's 15 new gates, capable of accommodating up to 20 aircraft. Other promised improvements include fully automated TSA security screening checkpoints and RFID luggage tracking

Construction of MCO Terminal C began in 2017. The estimated timeline released by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority is below.

  • February 28, 2022 — Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO)
       — City of Orlando issues a TCO when key life safety systems are accepted for critical areas
  •  May 1, 2022 — Substantial Completion
       — The program is substantially complete when it is ready for its intended use to operate
  • May-July 2022 — Operational Readiness
       — Transition from construction to operations: Getting the people familiar with the building/systems and test processes/procedures to ensure a successful opening
  • July 2022 — Start of Operations
