Ron Raike leaves Cask & Larder; eat with your hands at East End Market

Plus: Dine Out for No Kid Hungry in September

We reported last week that brewmaster Ron Raike will leave Cask & Larder; now comes more news from the C&L family. James and Julie Petrakis will open Swine & Sons Provisions at 595 W. Fairbanks Ave., selling sandwiches, chef Rhys Gawlak’s charcuterie and, if they can clear regulatory barriers, Cask & Larder Brewery beers.

This month, eating out can help hungry kids – and not just the ones at the table. Seventy-five Orlando restaurants take part in Share Our Strength’s Dine Out for No Kid Hungry event, ranging from Marlow’s Tavern, 4 Rivers Smokehouse and Mellow Mushroom to Arby’s, Denny’s and Papa John’s. Participating restaurants pledge to create their own fundraising program; diners are encouraged simply to eat a few of their 90 monthly meals at a participating restaurant. Masterchef contestant Francis Biondi teams with Kappo to host a kamayan – a Filipino feast eaten entirely with the hands, no utensils – at East End Market Sept. 22. Expect heaps of rice, whole fish, lumpia and pork adobo piled on banana leaves on a communal table. Rene Nguyen of Hanson’s Shoe Repair will create a Filipino-inspired craft cocktail.

The latest eatery to open in the quaint little Thornton Park cottage previously home to Iza Tapas Bar and Aroma Wine Bar is Island Time. They plan to serve craft and local beers along with a small snack menu.

Another location of Winter Park’s Extract Juice Bar will open in downtown’s Church Street Exchange building, joining an outpost of Downtown Credo Coffee, the Canvs co-working space and the Iron Yard programming bootcamp.

Thursday, Sept. 18, is National Cheeseburger Day! Check blogs.orlandoweekly.com for our local burger recommends – but if you don’t dig burgers, it’s also Free Queso Day at area Moe’s restaurants. Get a free cup of queso and some chips, no purchase necessary.

BRIEFLY:

Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café in Sanford will be open on Mondays starting Sept. 22 … Winter Park Fish Co. has greatly expanded their menu and now offers table service; it may get harder to get a seat on $2 Taco Tuesdays … Gators Dockside will open next year in the SoDo development in Downtown South … New outposts of Dexter’s and BurgerFi are among restaurant tenants at the Grove in Windermere.
