Tuesday, August 30 – Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
Now that the weird Broadway musical version of this Pedro Almodóvar sexual farce from 1988 has gone the way of the gazpacho, it’s time to refocus attention on the proper, Oscar-nominated film. Starring Carmen Maura as Pepa, a wronged woman who only gets wronger, and Antonio Banderas as Carlos, Pepa’s former lover who seems to have slept with everyone she comes into contact with, it’s a deliciously hysterical look at a woman for whom luck is not only unladylike, but it’s downright determined to ruin her. We’re not sure if this has anything to do with tonight’s screening, but Bridesmaids comes out on DVD about three weeks later, and trust us, Women on the Verge serves as a perfect appetizer in its own twisted way. Another nice coincidence: Banderas and Almodóvar recently teamed up again in the forthcoming film The Skin I Live In, which was nominated for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and should be released stateside in October. – Justin Strout (9:30 p.m. at Enzian Theater, 1300 S.
