Imagine if all the screenwriters in Hollywood exploded all at once, in some kind of fiery reverse-Rapture situation. Without new screenplays, every movie would be a remake, and every summer we’d have to see things like Channing Tatum with bullwhip and fedora, saving the Ark of the Covenant; Kristen Stewart declaring, “I vont to be alone”; Reese Witherspoon making a dress out of the curtains or Jay Pharoah punching aliens in yet another Independence Day. It’s the same thing with plays: It can’t all be Romeo and Juliet and South Pacific. Without new plays, the form would stagnate. Since 1997, the mission of the Playwrights’ Round Table has been to nurture new plays from inception to production, through monthly script workshops and staged readings. Praising What Is Lost, by David Strauss, is the PRT’s first full-length production (they produce short play series throughout the year), and therefore a momentous occasion. We’ll look for it on Broadway around, say, 2022. – Jessica Bryce Young
