In April, 2014 Polk City-based Fantasy of Flight (you know, the attraction that features the giant airplane on the side of I-4 on the way to Tampa) shut its doors to the general public. While the space did remain a popular location for private events, the award-winning facility mostly got back to its roots by focusing on aircraft restoration and maintenance.
Luckily, the attraction recently announced that it will once again open its doors in the form of a scaled-down (both in size and hours) museum. A former maintenance hangar will house a number of the more popular aircrafts from the private collection, including the 1944 B-24J Liberator, 1945 North American P-51D Mustang and 1945 Grumman Duck.
“We want to allow the aircraft-loving public the opportunity to reconnect while we continue to create and design the next iteration (Act III) of the Fantasy of Flight attraction," Fantasy of Flight owner Kermit Weeks said in a recent press release. "While there won’t be a restaurant, restoration tours, aircraft-of-the-day, ropes course or immersion environments for the plane enthusiast, there will be as many planes as we can comfortably put on display."
There will also be bi-plane rides offered at the attraction once again. Sadly, the new museum will only be open on very select weekends from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Fantasy of Flight has also confirmed that other much larger plans are still in the works for the 300-acre site. Let’s hope the attraction turns from its nosedive and takes off just like the airplane out on I-4 did.
