Evan Dando of the Lemonheads wooed Orlando fans with a freewheeling Valentine's Day show at the Social

Evan Dando and Willy Mason romanced Orlando with delightfully freewheeling and spontaneous sets on Valentine's Day in front of an intimate crowd of the faithful at The Social.

Dando in particular reveled in the creative freedom afforded to him by an empty stage, an acoustic guitar and a single microphone. What other artist of his generation of indie-rockers could effortlessly veer from his own slice of playful alt-rock perfection — "It's a Shame About Ray" — to a Guy Clark cover to an absolutely devastating reading of Big Star's "Holocaust"?

The setlist — for there was a physical setlist onstage, but it seemed to be a listing of every single song ever written in popular music — was very covers-heavy, with Tim Hardin, Smudge, Victoria Williams, Gram Parsons and Florida Georgia Line all on the menu. But Dando has always been one to take out a favorite song or three out for a spin live, and it worked here. The Lemonheads songs he played were hits and hits only, drawing mostly from It's a Shame About Ray and Come On Feel the Lemonheads, much to the crowd's delight.

Dando was having a ball onstage as he kept reeling off song after song after song — "Rudderless"! a Black Sabbath cover! "Being Around"! "Gloomy Sunday" (which, if memory serves, he did an a cappella verse of in the mid-1990s when venue staff at either Beacham or Visage cut the power to try and shoo him offstage)!

The show came to an end after a cover of B-side and live fave "Frank Mills" (from Hair), and Dando took off his guitar so he could spin around on the floor in front of the stage belting out the words, audience singing along. With an almost sheepish wave, he left the stage having thoroughly wooed all in attendance. What a Valentine's Day.
