World's largest sperm bank opens first egg center near UCF

Cryos, the world's largest sperm bank, is celebrating their one-year anniversary in Orlando by launching its first egg bank right down the road from UCF.

The new 2,600 square-foot facility, located on N. Alafaya Trail, includes a full embryology lab and a surgical center, according to a company press release.

Because of the large population of women waiting until later in life to have children, the demand for donor eggs has grown greater than the supply.

This new center will give women the opportunity to freeze their unfertilized eggs as well as donate their eggs to childless people in their communities. 

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the frozen eggs are usually sold in batches of five to eight, costing between $13,000 and $20,000. 

In order to donate, women must be between the ages of 18 and 32 and have body mass index 19 to 27. The center is currently accepting applications, a process that typically last 30 days. Once approved, the month-long retrieval process, including training, education and meetings, all takes place at the Orlando center. 

According to the Cryos website, egg donors must undergo several doctor's appointments and be prepared to take medication over several weeks. 

Donors also can't be using any implanted or injected forms of birth control and must undergo physical and emotional evaluations. 

There is a strong preference for donors who are college-educated or pursuing a degree or in working in a long-term professional career. 

Cryos hasn't decided on a sale price yet, but is considering selling a single egg for $3,000. 

Donors will be paid $5,000, according to the Sentinel.
