Since 2012 the International Labour Organization reported 20.9 million victims of human trafficking around the world. The 27 million information you printed is inaccurate and was never proven to be accurate (“Of human bondage,” Sept. 10). That number is considered outdated since 2012.
The Florida Coalition against Human Trafficking has been working with H2B visa exploitation cases since 2008. We were instrumental in the largest foreign labor-trafficking cases in Florida. The majority of labor trafficking victims are not Hispanic as more and more victims are being recruited and transported to the United States from Asia.
Whoever provided you with information regarding the guest worker visa program and human trafficking is very new to the issue and misguided you. The Florida Coalition against Human Trafficking has been working on cases since 2004, and its founder since 1999. She is considered by many to be the “mother” of anti-trafficking in the US. She has mentored many in the field, including some from Orlando. She was instrumental in the creation of Orlando Rescue and Restore in October 2007.
The majority of the labor trafficking victims are not found in the agriculture business. Most are found in hotels and restaurants, among many other places. We must not forget domestic-servitude victims as well.
