The best beaches in Florida, according to sharks

Sharks are a fact of life in Florida. If you're at the beach, there's probably one within a beachball bounce away. However, some Florida beaches are more popular than others, for sharks.

The Florida Museum of Natural History's map of unprovoked shark attacks since 1882 shows the total number of incidents by county. The museum defines "unprovoked attacks" as having occurred in a shark's natural habitat. Clearly, sharks love these Florida counties, so we ranked them from most loved to least amount of shark-related incidents.

But don't fret—shark attacks are very rare, even in our lovely state which accounts for 58 percent of all shark attacks in the U.S. and 35 percent of the world's total shark attacks, and very few have been fatal in recorded history. If you think about it, that's pretty good considering the billions of people engaging in aquatic activities annually.

Brevard and its neighboring county of Volusia share the most shark attacks than any other region in the state.

Indian River County
22 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks
Indian River County has a pet shark that they (probably) miss dearly. Katharine the great white was spotted in the waters of Vero Beach last April before being transported 1,000 miles north to Cape Cod a month later. More recently, local shark experts have noted the Indian River lagoon as "the northernmost nursery for bull sharks" prior to their recent migration to North Carolina waters. Rest assured, though, this lagoon is still their home.

12 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks
Just a few months after being spotted off the coast of a Monroe County beach, Miss Costa the great white shark was seen north in the Gulf on New Year’s Day this past January. But way back in 2000, a swimmer died from “terrible wounds” caused by a shark that attacked him in shallow waters near his Boca Ciega Bay home. At the time, 32 shark attacks had been reported in the nation, and 22 of them were in Florida. You could say it was a vicious year for bites.

Venice Beach is called the "shark tooth capital of the world." Shark sightings are rare here now, but they once swarmed these waters, and over time the sands wash over the remains to expose the fossilized teeth. A great hammerhead off the coast of Siesta Key Beach scared the crap out of beachgoers in 2016, but they say no one has been bitten by a shark at Venice Beach.

4 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks
If you couldn’t tell by the low number of unprovoked attacks, shark bites are "very few and far between" in this county. But this past March, some fishermen came close to a 14-foot white shark off the coast of Fernandina Beach. The massive hunter reportedly came out from under their boat and ate half of a 50-pound drum fish—wait for it—in one single bite. Well, damn.
