Historic Plaza Live rooftop spire removed, more changes to come during renovation

Orlando's Plaza Live venue is currently undergoing a series of renovations aimed at conserving the building's history and restoring its iconic rooftop spire.

One of Florida's oldest theaters, the Plaza Live was founded in 1963 as a cinema and has since been transformed into a live theater and event venue, hosting more than 100,000 guests annually. Since its inception, the Plaza has been known for its spire that once lit up and rotated whenever a film, concert or event was happening live inside.

Now, for the first time in more than 60 years, the building's spire has been removed to be refurbished so it can spin once again.

But the revamped spire is just a part of the venue's upcoming changes; the restoration project aims to produce a fully refreshed boutique music and entertainment venue in the heart of Orlando's Milk District, the Plaza Live board told Orlando Weekly.

"The renovation will increase our capacity for a larger audience at the venue as well as enhance the audience experience," general manager Megan Kelley said. "The Plaza is a place that artists and groups love to perform. Lyle Lovett performed here often and says that he and his band love to perform here. There is something special about the size of our venue at the Plaza that makes it special for the artist and the audience. We can’t wait to reopen offering such a unique and intimate venue for our community.”

Support for the renovations and restorations come from a grant provided by the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, as well as Tourist Development Tax monies granted by Orange County. The project is set to benefit the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Plaza Live Foundation is working to raise a remaining $1.4 million in a campaign called "inSPIRE!" Donations can be made at the Plaza's website or by contacting the Orlando Philharmonic Philanthropy Department at 407-896-6700 x 225.
