I’m a frequent traveler aboard cruise ships, and a big fan of the live entertainment that they offer, so believe that it’s no backhanded compliment when I say Kayla Fischl’s Unconditionally could comfortably fill one of the cabaret lounges aboard Royal Caribbean or MSC — both of which she’s sailed aboard as a main stage lead vocalist. For this world premiere of her new solo show, which she’s hoping to book on boats as a guest artist, Fischl collaborated with arranger Chuck Curry to assemble three tight musical sets paying tribute to powerhouse pop divas.

Fischl, clad in a sequintastic jumpsuit straight off the vintage Vegas strip, kicks off with a Lady Gaga medley, then tackles Adele’s chart-toppers before topping off the show with some Katy Perry. Along the way, she tosses out Mardi Gras beads and beach balls to the audience while belting out the hits, transitioning between singers with self-deprecating interactive patter that shows off her engaging personality.

Without live musicians, this is ultimately a dressed-up karaoke show, and although the backing tracks are well produced, at press preview the Yellow Venue’s middling microphone did Kayla’s obviously well-trained voice few favors. I appreciated her emotional interpretation of tunes like “Hello” and the title track, but inconsistent breath support undermined the top end of her dynamic range. Fischl maintains a fine pace throughout her brief 35-minute runtime, but an awkward pause for an unnecessary costume change interrupts her finale’s momentum.

Unconditionally is a self-admitted work-in-progress, and as such it provides a unique opportunity to experience an artist’s process in real time. More than just a collection of catchy tunes, Unconditionally also includes an uplifting message about loving each other and being proud of yourself. Check her out while she’s on shore, because the next time you have a chance to see Kayla Fischl perform, you might need to spring for a stateroom for the privilege.
