Orlando Fringe favorite Katie Thayer, best known for her bikini advertising service and one-woman Titanic parody, is back with Intimi(dating), a candid comedic cabaret examining her unsuccessful love affairs, which largely involved emotionally unavailable Canadians. Dressed in a red sequined Jessica Rabbit dress that’s slit up to there, and delivering scandalously sharp-witted one-liners about her insufficient suitors, it’s no wonder that some lesser men might find Thayer intimidating. But Orlando’s answer to Mae West has more than mere male mockery in mind, as Katie digs into dating horror stories so stressful that they shatter her fourth wall.
From her first lesbian love at summer camp to intimacy with an ex-convict to polyamorous strippers and a very well-hung Brit, Thayer recounts all the ginormous red flags she’s overlooked in favor of hot sex. She punctuates her salacious stories by strumming delicate ditties about her not-so-great loves on a ukulele; she’s a strong singer, so I wish she let more of her songlets fully develop.
Not every journey she shares is linear, and you get the feeling she might be as problematic as the boys she beds, considering her propensity for going scorched-earth on her exes. But every bad beau leads to life lessons and laughter (not necessarily in that order). And when Thayer finally strips away her amorous armor, the emotional vulnerability of her anti-fairy tale ending will make you want to go out and kiss a few frogs of your own — just so long as they aren’t from Canada.
