The $#!T is a stripped-down solo piece that turns one extremely cramped setting into a surprisingly expressive walk down memory lane. Writer-star Matti McLean’s performance has the feeling of a confessional monologue, using a toilet stall as the main setting for framing a love story that has shifted from romance to resentment to something more complicated entirely.
The solo format keeps the audience locked into the story’s emotional logic, even when the content gets explicit. The nudity and sexual content are not there just for shock; they reinforce the vulnerability of a piece that doesn’t hide behind the polish. It’s real, and I think we’ve definitely all had moments similar to this show. It uses embarrassment, humor and bodily reality to bring something much more universal forward: how hard it can be to let go of someone who still knows you best.
There’s a rawness to the writing that makes this piece feel deeply personal, as if the setting of the play isn’t already brave enough. The $#!T is funny, blunt and makes you feel exposed … a combination making for great Fringe appeal.
