Coralie Claeysen-Gleyzon and Dennis Liddy of Jai Gallery in Orlando check out the trends at the art fairs this year. Coralie points out the multitude of pieces incorporating layers, such as this backlit layered glass piece by Peter Byum pictured here.Context Art Fair Credit: Patricia Lois Nuss
In addition to looking at photographic artworks, Patrick and Holly Kahn admit this is not their only interest – innovative sculptures are also of interest. Here we take a moment to look at a para-human sculpture by Kate Clark. This Zebra piece is suitably titled “She Gets What She Wants”. Kate Clark’s “work studies the tension between personal and mythical realms by creating sculpture that synthesizes the human face and the body of wild animals.” – artist bio. Wynwood has become known for its Basel art parties and mass graffiti, referred to as the “Wynwood walls.” This is city-approved graffiti artwork, which decorates the warehouses in this area. Wynwood makes for an excellent venue for pop-up galleries featuring emerging artists that won’t be found in the “high-art” scene of places like the convention center. The economic struggle for many in America did not make a huge display in the works in Miami (probably because the sales are geared for those not feeling the hits as hard), an exception is this piece by Jeremiah Johnson titled “Dream House #11,” a sculpture created entirely of unopened credit card applications. Every year, only a short walk from the booming sales at the convention center, the hotels down Collins Avenue open their doors to smaller galleries and artists alike. Such hotels can be found in the Catalina and Aqua, to name a few. Orlando’s very own Rebecca Rose acquired a room to feature her work in Select Art Fair at the Catalina this year. She has become well known for her conceptual and intricate wearable designs. Rose sold 9 pieces while at the show and had a chance to show off the hard work (and talent) that earned her a Halstead Grant.
