Orlando bar The Attic announced this week it will close its doors for good after 16 years in the space, the latest in a long string of nightlife venue closures downtown.

The Attic is open through this weekend for “one last ride.” Sunday, May 31, is its last day.

The decision to close comes after rising costs in order to operate the club with a “lack of meaningful support or solutions from local leadership and city officials,” The Attic team wrote in a social media announcement on May 26. This same closing announcement was reposted on the Instagram account for the Treehouse, an adjoining club in the same building with the same ownership, but it’s not immediately clear if that spot will be closing their doors as well.

The closure announcement comes amid a long string of hardships faced by downtown Orlando businesses. Starting Feb. 1, downtown Orlando venues holding After Midnight Alcohol Sales permits have been required to pay their policing fees in a lump sum, in advance, for the month ahead.

The changes are part of the city’s move toward Project DTO, an initiative to achieve a downtown focused on high-wage jobs, family-friendly spaces and a deemphasis on nightlife.

Since early 2023, Arena Art Bar, Shots, Dapper Duck, 1-Up, HighT, Ember, Chillers, Irish Shannon’s, Cahoots and High Tide have closed downtown. Just this year, two storied spots, Tanqueray’s and Cocktails and Screams, also shut down.
