As a polyamorous Leo who leads the local Rocky Horror Picture Show cast and loves personal attention, Valerie Von Voss is perhaps the perfect person to present a deliciously deep dive into pop culture’s bisexual boom of the mid-late-aughts. But The Fast and the Bi-Curious isn’t just a TED Talk that you can hoot and holler at, because Voss’s vulnerable slideshow chronicling her sexual awakening is really about the universal experience of trying to bend familial bonds without breaking them.

Growing up outside Boston, Voss’s childhood obsessions with celebrity magazines and classic movies led her to her lifelong crush — Drew Barrymore, duh — while a headline-making kiss between Madonna and Britney only increased the gap between Valerie and her homophobic father. Struggling to connect with her peers and parents, as a baby bisexual she looked to Katy Perry, Tila Tequila and Glee for guidance before discovering Tumblr (aka the early internet’s Gay Straight Alliance) and her own self-confidence.

The Fast and the Bi-Curious contains exactly the kind of raunchy sex-positive comedy you’d expect from this burlesque diva, but it also includes a deeper message about father-daughter relationships and the battle against bi erasure. It’s almost a good thing that Voss doesn’t close with a neatly satisfying ending, because it means she’s got plenty more material for her (hopefully) inevitable sequel.
