Evangelicals are still awaiting the Second Coming of their messiah, but champion gymnast Arthur Davis III is skipping straight to the threequel in his first Orlando Fringe appearance as Big Gay Jesus, the Zeus-sired half-sibling of the better-known Nazarene. Literally rolling onstage in front of a costume rack full of fabulous furs, Davis looks like the love child of Ted Neely and Dave Grohl, only with bigger biceps. His ridiculous religion only has three rules: sinning is winning, clapping and chanting along is mandatory, and giving generously to his Venmo is a sacrament on par with taking the body of Christ into your mouth (without spitting it back out).
Big Gay Jesus — BGJ for short — is the first omnipotent savior with an OnlyFans account, and even though he’s 51, he doesn’t look a day over 33 (rimshot). Sharing his cosmic wisdom through songs, complimentary crowdwork and pseudo-psychic readings, Davis exudes positive vibes with seductively silly charisma.
With the help of co-creator/director (and fellow Cirque du Soleil alum) Shannan Calcutt, Davis has created a theatrical experience that’s simultaneously outrageously sacrilegious and endearingly heartfelt. He’s a much better stand-up storyteller and athlete than he is a vocalist, some of his audience participation segments could be somewhat shortened, and a late-show detour into sexual abuse seems to come out of left field. But if you aren’t at least amused by BGJ’s Burning Man trip into a birth canal, you may be at the wrong theater festival.
