There are only about a dozen homes on Florida’s isolated Cook Island, and now one of them is for sale.

Located at 3 W. Cook Burg Pne., the beach cottage was built in 1985 and is truly “off-the-grid” in just about every way.

There are no utilities on Cook Island, so the home uses solar power and gets its water from a rain cistern.

Accessible only by boat or seaplane, Cook Island sits near Big Pine Island in the Florida Keys, and was first settled by Captain Percy Cook in the 1920s. For years was it used as a fish camp for wintering vacationers from the north.

Though sparsely populated, Cook Island bore the brunt of Hurricane Irma, which damaged many of the homes, including this one, when the storm made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in 2017.

Today, the cottage has been raised from the sand. Its 704 square feet of living space include three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It also comes with a dock permit, since the old one appears to have been blown away.

Asking price for the beach cottage is currently $799,000 and the listing agents are Dave Wiley and Banks G. Prevatt of Coldwell Banker Schmitt RE Co. Lower Keys Office.
