The can’t-be-tamed Philly-based foursome Mannequin Pussy delivered a divine show at Orlando’s Beacham Friday night. It was the second-to-last stop of their tour in support of their new and critically acclaimed album I Got Heaven, and heavenly it was.
The setlist spanned all four of the band’s albums and left plenty of space for primal screams, dancing and catharsis. Lead vocalist Marisa “Missy” Dabice took a moment between songs to comment on the contention that surrounds the word “pussy” and the importance of inviting all voices to be heard. (This came after Dabice asked only the men in the room to yell “pussy” — which was unsurprisingly much less powerful than when everyone in the room joined in.)
Dabice also had choice words for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and all the audience members’ “God-fearing parents,” seamlessly tapping into I Got Heaven’s themes of unapologetic desire, Christian hypocrisy and emotional complexity.
It was a little pocket of heaven right here in Orlando. Margaritas Podridas opened the show.
