Friday the 13th was a lucky night for new-wave and post-punk fans in Orlando as bass icon Peter Hook came to town.
New Order and Joy Division co-founder Hook and his backing band The Light played the New Order album Get Ready in its entirety as only the first act of the night. After a short break, the band came back and blew the packed house away with a long set of Joy Division and New Order favorites and even one number from Monaco.
Hook and his Light had the crowd singing along and dancing through the entire second set. Hook’s son Jack (also, trivia fans, the current touring bassist for Smashing Pumpkins) played bass alongside his dad, freeing up Peter to focus more on the vocals.
Hook dedicated the JD classic “Atmosphere” to Ian Curtis and Mike Peters of the Alarm. And they ended the night with a moving version of Joy Division’s iconic “Love Will Tear Us Apart. “A magical night,” sayeth Jim Leatherman. And he knows musical magic.
