Orlando robot invasion shock! Wait, it was just Kraftwerk at Steinmetz Hall

Orlando welcomed our new robot overlords Kraftwerk (who would frankly be a marked improvement from current state and national leadership) back to the Dr. Phillips Center Wednesday. This time they played Steinmetz Hall, duly maxing out the bass capabilities of the ritzy venue with their sleek, pulsing synth-pop.

The German electro pioneers, with a career that stretches back to the 1970s, are responsible for most of the music you like if you are lucky enough to still enjoy music in the age of algorithms. They’re still at it as the world slowly falls apart, still taciturn and robotic behind mysterious synths, letting the whimsy and black humor in the projections behind them (including Orlando-specific references) substitute for mask-dropping.

The crowd came similarly suited in requisite red and black and retro-futuristic threads, ready to hear timeless anthems about killer mannequins, the joys of bicycling and highways in Germany. The quartet didn’t disappoint with command performances of “Computerlove,” “Model,” “Radioactivity,” “Man Machine,” “Robots,” “Tour De France” and many many more.

This is a band of legends who do not disappoint, a perfect mix of humanity and machine that is harmonious in all the best ways.
