As an impressively functioning shorter leg of California’s Stones Throw label, Now-Again Records began issuing (and reissuing) vinyl in 2003, carving out a niche market in funk ‘ new and old. Cratediggin’ DJs like Cut Chemist and J. Rocc chimed in over the years with remixes for Now-Again’s 12-inch singles, and Now-Again Re: Sounds collects edits such as theirs for CD release. Bookending entries from beatmaker/vocalist Koushik register as both ‘gorgeousâ? and ‘bangin’â? on Now-Again, with Percee P rapid-firing verses around erratic breaks on ‘Cold Beats.â? Coming off an impeccable single pair-up with Black Milk earlier this year, Guilty Simpson’s moody, low-slung ‘Before I Dieâ? (atop rockers the Heliocentrics) whets appetites for his debut LP, while Oh No flexes his honed sample discernment on ‘Kashmere Bonus Beats,â? a short cooker laced with channel-skipping vocals and a wiry guitar loop. Yep, crown another winner from the Stones Throw corner.
