Recurring stateside approval for France’s Ed Banger Records might be off-putting to stuck-up indie elitist whiners, but Ed Rec Vol. 1 offers airtight evidence of the label’s exciting platform. A casual listen to this digital release ‘ from the pulverizing, ragged electro of Justice’s ‘Waters of Nazarethâ? to the bright dance rock of Vicarious Bliss ‘ doesn’t say much for a common thread in the Ed Banger Records roster. There are weird and unheralded stunners, too (such as Beatmaker), who linger below the Ed Banger buzz. From his 2005 Smoking Kills single, Sebastian offers a trendy, tempting dance-floor pulse and icy techno bleeps in ‘Dolami,â? a sharp, far more listenable entry than the sugary ‘Pop the Glockâ? from Paris-based pseudo-MC Uffie; there’s a rigid love-her-or-hate-her thing happening with that dry delivery. Few labels can boast spotlighting such a quirky output; it might even please your whining friends.
