Perhaps emboldened by that manic monstrosity known as The Mars Volta, Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Dub Trio returns with their amps turned up to 11. While Dub Trio does lay down serious space-tripping dub, New Heavy is more like a blast of Zeppelin’s past than a night out with King Tubby. Dub Trio’s debut, Exploring the Dangers Of, alluded to as much, with Stu Brooks, D.P. Holmes and Joe Tomino mixing dub and rock at will, but New Heavy is a bigger boot-kick to the brain matter. The trio bludgeons neck-cracking Metallica riffs over four-to-the-floor ska in ‘Table Rock Dub,â? invites Mike Patton to wail on the histrionic ‘Not Aloneâ? and recalls the glory days of ‘Tom Sawyerâ?-era Rush on ‘Jack Bauer.â? Their music still simmers, but Dub Trio has been lost to the dark side.
