All hail the locavore Mecca

All hail the locavore Mecca

Forty-one years ago today, Alice Waters opened the doors of a new restaurant — and set the stage for today’s obsession with local, fresh, organic food. The prix fixe menu for the first night at Chez Panisse: pâté en croûte, salad, duck with olives and almond tart … for $3.95.

However you feel about the grande dame of California cuisine (love her, hate her, creepily obsessed with her), there’s no denying the movement she birthed, or the debt locavores owe her.
