Asian dessert soups are going to have a moment this year in Mills 50.

Fan Hwa, a shop by Jiang’s Kitchen owner Eric Jiang serving tong sui, or Cantonese “sugar water,” will open later next month at 709 N. Mills Ave. Around the same time, Danh Nguyen and Grace Ramos will serve slurpers at Catchè, a dessert house specializing in Vietnamese dessert soups called chè.

“It’s the go-to dessert for most Vietnamese people, including us,” says Nguyen. “There aren’t any chè places in Orlando anymore, not after Bambū Desserts & Drinks closed, so we wanted to bring back the chè experience but with a modern aesthetic.”

The inspiration for Catchè came after a recent trip to Vietnam where Nguyen and Ramos visited numerous chè joints to indulge in what they call their “favorite dessert.” Chè can run the textural and thermal gamut with bases ranging from coconut milk to pandan water with a diverse range of ingredients, be it mung beans, jellies or tropical fruits.

Nguyen and Ramos haven’t finalized their chè menu just yet — “we’re perfecting it,” they say — but did reveal that Vietnamese coffee, fresh juices and non-soupy desserts will be offered as well.

Catchè will open at 1220 E. Colonial Drive in Mills 50 in mid-May. Be sure to follow @catcheorlando for the latest.
