For the past 24 years, the city of Sanford has had an annual tradition: People who live in those totally gorgeous historic homes downtown decorate them for the holidays and open their doors to people who buy tickets to look at the candles and pretty lights, and admire their gorgeous decor. It’s called Historic Sanford’s Tour of Homes. But leave it to the oddballs who keep Sanford weird to come up with their own version of the event, taking place that same evening. It’s called the Hysterical Sanford Tour of Gnomes and Pub Invasion, and instead of carolers, hot cocoa and stately historic homes, it’ll feature people dressed as singing Smurfs, dwarves and gnomes, cold beer and homey bars. So, get your best gnome outfit ready (if you don’t have one, you can improvise) and prepare for flash-mobbing, harmonizing, pub-crawling and general hysteria. Oh, and drinking. Lots of drinking. You can’t be a hysterical gnome on a tour of downtown Sanford sober. – Erin Sullivan
