Elisa Scarpa, owner of Fatto in Casa, closed her Italian specialty food shop May 29 after three years at the East End Market.
Scarpa says she’s plans to spend time with her parents and family in Italy and, in a post on Fatto in Casa’s Facebook page, says she has “no plans to open a new location for now.”
Moving in to share the space on June 15 will be a pop-up bakery collaboration between Gezellig Cookies and Flour Life Bakery.
“The theme,” says Gezellig’s Cassandra Plas, “is a modern European bakery with French and Dutch leanings.”
Flour Life’s Georgie Roberts will fashion custom cakes, macarons and other French-inspired desserts, while Plas will focus on making stroopwafels along with other Dutch cookies like speculaas (spice cookies – the kind that inspired Trader Joe’s cookie butter, in fact), gevulde speculaas (spice bars with marzipan filling) and knipertjes (crispy rolled cookies).
Special desserts will also be made throughout the month and, yes, my fellow Canadians: Plas assures me her Jos Louis sponge cakes will be offered.
While East End Market will make the space available for pop-ups in the short term, Plas hopes to secure it permanently.
The pair will bake their goodies on-site until July 14.
