Here’s some welcome food news: Peperoncino in Dr. Phillips is expanding into the adjacent Bay Hill Eye Care space. The expansion will allow chef Barbara Alfano and executive chef Danilo Martorano (her husband) to make authentic Italian pizzas in the Roman and Neapolitan style.

In my 2012 review, I praised Alfano’s “clear, brilliant flavors,” which “give the Old World-inspired menu a refreshing breath of life.” In our profile of Alfano in this year’s BITE magazine, she told us that the quality time she spent with her grandmothers, particularly during long summers in Italy, was inspirational and formative.

The pizza oven will arrive from Italy in two weeks. Signature pizzas will be “soft on top and crispy on the bottom,” using genuine high-quality ingredients imported from Italy with DOP designations, and to-go and delivery options will be available. A lunchtime pizza special will include a slice, choice of a salad or side, and a beer for $9. Kids eat free pizza on Monday nights, and parties that order two large pizzas and will get a dessert pizza on the house. The Alfanos also plan to offer private chef’s lessons and pizza-making classes.

The larger space is scheduled to open in three or four weeks’ time; a new patio, full liquor, and live music will also be a part of the new Peperoncino. Stay tuned as more details become available.
