Much like any horror-film slasher worth their salt, Spooky Empire rose from the logistical dead after a hurricane cancellation earlier in October to pull off another satisfyingly chilling convention.
Forget Jason and Michael Myers — this year was all about two very different purveyors of dread: Clive Barker and Art the Clown. Hellraiser visionary Barker is on his farewell tour of conventions, and Spooky was a love-fest for this seminal horror author. Photo ops, panels, signings, even an art show all spoke to the lasting impact of Barker’s work.
And Orlando definitely sent in the clowns, because Terrifier cosplay was utterly ubiquitous and carefully crafted. Our sentimental faves among the garbed legions were all of the Cenobite cosplayers. The weekend ended Halloween on a satisfying note.
