A dozen of the Magic Kingdom’s most beloved heroes and villains are competing in a cutthroat social contest over a prize pot of pressed pennies, and only one will emerge victorious. Welcome to Once Upon a Traitor: Faithfully Ever After, a pixie-dusted spoof of both theme parks and reality television co-written by Derick Taylor-White and Danielle Ziss.

Similar to the Alan Cumming–hosted hit show, teams of “faithfuls” and “traitors” are assembled at an ancient castle and expected to backstab each other with votes and metaphorical murders. The twist is that, rather than D-list celebs and refugees from other reality shows, the players are pulled from the ranks of Disney’s animated icons, and fed a diet of Mickey ice cream bars and stale churros between bouts of silly game-show stunts. Traitors fans will giggle knowingly at the overly complicated voting rules and repetitive musical clips referencing the popular series, but the uninitiated (like myself) should still be able to follow along, as long as they’re familiar with the iconic personae and area attractions being name-checked.

Once Upon a Traitor offers a killer concept with some coy twists on classic characters, as well as cutting cartoon quips, even if the satire doesn’t dig much deeper than observing that Disney’s snacks are too expensive and their princesses’ parents are mostly dead. There are far too many performers onstage for most to make much individual impact, and opening night suffered from some inconsistent pickups across the ensemble, but Theresa Smith-Levin’s Evil Queen, Ha’ani Hogan’s Moana and Chris Teixeira’s Captain Hook manage to stand out in the crowd.

By far the best reason to see Once Upon aTraitor is Alexander Mrazek as the Magic Mirror host. He looks like the love child of Dr. Facilier and Dr. Frank N. Furter, and the way he rolls his rrrrr’s makes me shiver with antici … pation for the upcoming Villains Land, even if they murdered Tom Sawyer to make it.
