Fringin’ and Flagons: The Last Stand Tavern takes the chaos of a familiar RPG and turns it into an interactive, completely improvised, live comedy gauntlet where nobody gets plot armor. In this production based on the classic role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons, hosts Michael Marinaccio and Tracy McCoy guide the action while Billy McCoy serves as dungeon master. The high concept of this production: It introduces new “Fringe celeb players” in every performance, making each night unique in its own way.

The format is part improv, part fantasy role-play and part bloodbath. While zombies quickly take over the world as we know it, the players are forced to roll and determine their own circumstances on how to defeat the evil and return balance to the game world. While the show structure does give off game-show energy, the immersive storytelling keeps it feeling theatrical rather than gimmicky. I’m not too into Dungeons and Dragons myself, but this show is a great way to introduce yourself to different game-related fandoms.

What makes this piece hilarious is the cast’s willingness to let absurdity and suspense coexist. One minute, it’s a silly tavern adventure with the introduction of all the character tropes; the next, it’s a full-on deathmatch against an undead lord and his zombie army. What keeps the energy fun and fresh is the rotation of the guest cast, so make sure you see a show at least one of the nights for a uniquely goofy and surprisingly disciplined story.
