The weekly Wednesday night comedy open mic at Bull & Bush, a British-style pub located on Robinson Street in Orlando’s Milk District, will move to Flower Girl in Thornton Park starting June 3.
Dubbed Bowl & Bush, a nod to its new home at the dispensary and an homage to its former residence, the mic will continue with current host Blake Butler. Butler, a fixture in the local comedy scene for 11 years, has hosted this mic for a year and anticipates a seamless transition.
The mic will continue to run from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Comedians should arrive by 8:45 p.m. to sign up.
Butler also hosts a Thornton Park mixed mic on Tuesday evenings at The Falcon Bar.
The mic’s departure from Bull & Bush coincides with the pub’s acquisition of a liquor license and subsequent expansion to a full bar, says bartender Travis Saylor.
“We will roll out a small specialty cocktail menu, just something really simple,” he tells OW. “We want to keep it classic. We don’t want to be a craft cocktail bar. We are dropping the open mic on Wednesdays but will still be doing the Shit Sandwich comedy showcase the first and third Saturday of every month.”
Meanwhile, this is not the mic’s first move. It got its start at Spacebar, says the mic’s former host Ross McCoy. That venue shut down in 2017, precipitating the move. The mic has also seen many hosts, from Tom Feeney and Joe Chlapowski to Big Tim to Abby Stassen and Alan Moore.
“From there, I took it over,” recalls McCoy. “I definitely remember joking with [head bartender] Scott Podlesnik that I would turn it around or we would just kill it.”
Bowl & Bush comedy open mic debuts at Flower Girl Greenhouse (110 Hill Ave.) on Wednesday, June 3, at 9 p.m. This will be a weekly event and admission is free.
