As cultural celebration and education remains as essential as ever, Orlando is in the midst of a Black History Month full of events, shows and activities we don’t want to miss. Here’s a guide to Orlando-area things to do celebrating Black heritage this February.

City of Orlando’s Black History Month Community Celebration Event
5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11
The city will host a community screening of Gospel, a PBS docuseries by Dr. Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, Jr.; Stacy L Holman and Shayla Harris. A reception before and after the screening will offer entertainment, food and gospel performances. This event is free and will take place at the New Covenant Baptist Church of Orlando.

Meet the Artists Reception
10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26
Meet the faces behind the visual artistry on display at the City of Orlando’s Black History Month Art Exhibition. Learn more about some of the 33 artists who have contributed to the gallery and the creative processes behind their work. The reception takes place at Orlando City Hall at Terrace Gallery & Rotunda, and a breakfast is provided.

Black History Month at Dr. Phillips Center
Through Feb. 15
The Dr. Phillips Center is set to host a variety of musical artists spanning genres, including Grammy Award winners and other creatives. Experience the voices of Selwyn Birchwood, Bilal, April Brown & After 5 and more. Ticket prices vary by event and can be purchased through the Dr. Phillips Center.

Timucua Amplifies Black Voices Concert Series
Through Feb. 15
The Timucua Arts Foundation will host a performance series to showcase regional jazz artists, including the voices of John Lumpkin and The Covenant, Ulysses Owens, Jr. and the 904 Jazz Organ Trio, EarthTonez and Gerald Law II and The Clutch. Tickets are $30 for general admission.

Reflection of Time III at Winter Garden City Hall
Through Feb. 28
Returning for a third year, this visual art exhibition features local Black artists from Winter Garden and Central Florida communities, highlighting their experiences and preserving their legacies. The exhibition is located at the Art in Public Places Gallery at Winter Garden City Hall, and entry is free.

African Americans and Labor: Black History Month Gallery at Orlando City Hall Through March 30
The City of Orlando will be showcasing the work of 33 local visual artists inspired by this year’s national Black History Month theme, “African Americans and Labor.” Entry is free and works will remain on display at Terrace Gallery at Orlando City Hall until the end of March.

Permanent Collections at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center
See personal accounts of both the hardships and triumphs of Winter Park African Americans in a unique collection of photographs and documented recordings of personal stories. The exhibit is located at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center in Winter Park and entry is free.
