Remember when Kate Hudson was a wise-beyond-her-years ingénue up for a golden statue and the world was at her feet? When it looked as if Cameron Crowe, having finally told his remarkable life story, could shrug off the accumulated weight of past glories (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Say Anything, Jerry Maguire) and move forward in bold new directions? Does anybody remember laughter? Although Hudson and Crowe haven’t delivered much of that last part since Billy Crudup’s “Golden God” leap off a roof and into a pool, Almost Famous (Untitled if you’re pasty) is still a treat to revisit. Informed by both Crowe’s unlikely rise from teenage rock reporter to hit screenwriter, and the writer-director’s voluminous chats with elder statesman Billy Wilder, the film effortlessly weaves through music-film and pseudo-biopic clichés with pinpoint steering, aided by one of the best soundtracks in movie history. – Justin Strout
