In an effort to better understand Cuban migrants, DeBary Mayor Clint Johnson says he will fly to Cuba and return to Florida on a makshift raft.

The 30-year-old adventurer/Mayor told the Daytona Beach News-Journal he plans to make this solo journey on a raft (made of 50 gallon drums) sometime in mid-April.

According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Johnson plans to fly to Havana with his wife and assemble the rig there.

Under new laws regarding Cuba travel, American citizens need specific licenses/reasons in order to enter Cuba. Johnson says he qualified for a license because of “journalism reasons,” and so he’ll be blogging about the trip.

He hopes to complete the 106 mile quest in roughly two days.
